Bringing a hundred years of history to life.
Intro
Red Jelly were asked to create an interactive digital timeline celebrating Woolworths Group’s 100-year history, highlighting key milestones and achievements from its inception in 1924 to the present day. This commemorative timeline showcases the company’s growth, innovations, and contributions to Australian retail over the past century. It detailed milestones, such as the introduction of new store formats, product lines, and community initiatives that have shaped the company’s journey.
The Technology
A highly-customised, kiosk-based user experience.
This interactive experience was built as a lightweight, progressive web app—leveraging service workers and local caching to enable full offline access, critical for kiosk deployments where internet reliability couldn’t be guaranteed. The back-end uses WordPress for dynamic content management, ensuring site changes can be easily made by content editors. Additionally, a specific kiosk mode was created, disabling the mouse cursor and optimising the layout for vertical kiosk orientation. To ensure an uninterrupted experience, we also configured each kiosk to restrict actions such as swipe gestures and keyboard shortcuts that could allow users to accidentally exit the timeline.
Taking the experience back to stores.
During and after the event, the interactive timeline was shared with store team members, giving them an opportunity to engage with the celebration and immerse themselves in the experience. This allowed them to reflect on the significance of the past 100 years and feel more connected to the overall experience. On scrolling the end, users were encouraged to put their knowledge to the test through a series of multiple-choice questions, reinforcing what they had learned in a fun and engaging way.
